I’ve been playing with logos for my LUG, and so far like this one the best
Other possibles are:
The pink one is for the people in the LUG who are more in touch with their feminine side

Dare I say is, the “first choice” looks a bit like Tux sitting in front an amateur version of the default Windows XP background.
Just speculating, but what about Tux in front of vertical blue and white stripes (Colchester FC home strip)… or a real penguin (from Colchester Zoo) instead of the cartoon Tux… or a Norman Keep (Colchester has the UK’s largest) with Tux.

how about using something that links in with colchester? maybe a tux in roman gear?
